My Town

'We have looked and looked for something for these children and nothing was suitable until this. It really is perfect'

youth offending team manager

My Town was a participatory photography project supporting young people caught up in the youth justice system to rewrite negative life stories.

Armed with a camera and the support of their peers, participants started to record and reflect on their lives. The project acted as a powerful catalyst, introducing new experiences, helping individuals to look around with fresh eyes and see new possibilities, and gradually building their confidence to see and represent themselves in new ways. My Town produced two exhibitions at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Castleford Arts Space and a book full of moving and beautiful photography, commentary and insights into the lives of young people caught up in negative life cycles.
